Getting started
How do I set my location?
Open Settings → Alerts and use the location field at the top. You have two options:
- Use my location — the app asks for permission once and reads your coordinates from the device.
- Search by city — start typing a place name and pick it from the list. No location permission is needed for this.
Once a location is set, the app works entirely offline.
Does Establish need an internet connection?
Only to search for a city by name. Everything else — prayer times, the Qibla direction, the Hijri date, affirmations, alerts and widgets — is calculated on your device and works in aeroplane mode.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Establish has no accounts, no sign-in and no subscription. Install it, set your location, and you're done.
What do the settings tabs contain?
- Alerts — location, calculation method and madhab, and every notification setting.
- Compass — the Qibla compass.
- More — time format, theme, affirmation themes, app icons and date adjustments.
- About — app information and credits.
Prayer times
The times don't match my local mosque. How do I fix that?
Mosques differ mainly in which calculation method they follow. Go to Settings → Alerts → Prayer Calculation Settings and pick the method your mosque uses — there are 13, including ISNA, Muslim World League, Umm al-Qura, Karachi, Egyptian General Authority, Diyanet, Singapore (MUIS), Kuwait, Qatar, the Gulf region, Tehran, France and Russia.
If only Asr is off, that's the madhab setting rather than the method. Switch between Hanafi and Shafi / Maliki / Hanbali in the same section.
How are the times calculated?
From your latitude and longitude, using standard astronomical formulas and the calculation method you selected. This happens on your device — the app does not download a prayer timetable from a server, so the times stay correct even with no signal.
Can I see the whole month?
Yes. Tap the date on the main screen to open the month calendar, which shows every prayer time for the month alongside both the Gregorian and Hijri dates.
Is Sunrise included?
Yes. Sunrise appears alongside the five prayers and has its own alert and sound settings, so you can set a reminder for the end of the Fajr window.
The Hijri date is a day out from my local calendar.
The app uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, which can differ by a day or two from local moon sighting. Go to Settings → More → Date Adjustment and shift the Hijri date to match your community. The adjustment applies everywhere — the app, the widgets and the Watch.
Do the times update when I travel?
If you allowed location access, yes — the app recalculates for your new position. If you set your city manually, update it in Settings → Alerts when you arrive.
Alerts & sounds
What are pre-alerts, prayer alerts and follow-ups?
Three separate layers, each of which you can switch on or off per prayer:
- Pre-alert — fires a set number of minutes before the prayer, so you can wrap up what you're doing.
- Prayer alert — fires at the prayer time itself.
- Follow-up alert — fires a set number of minutes afterwards, as a second nudge.
All three live in Settings → Alerts.
Can each prayer have a different sound?
Yes. In Settings → Alerts → Prayer Time Alerts, each prayer has its own sound picker with ten options, including six adhan recordings and several short tones. Tap a sound to preview it.
Pre-alerts and follow-ups have one sound each, set separately, so you can tell them apart from the prayer alert itself.
What is the count-up timer?
After a prayer time arrives, the app can show how long ago it started — useful for judging how much of the window is left. Turn it on in Settings → Alerts → Count Up and choose how long it should keep counting.
Can the phone vibrate when an alert arrives?
Yes — enable haptic feedback in Settings → Alerts. It works on a physical device; the simulator and the browser version don't vibrate.
I'm not receiving any notifications.
Work through these in order:
- Open iPhone Settings → Establish → Notifications and confirm they're allowed, with sounds enabled.
- In the app, check Settings → Alerts — the master notification permission card at the bottom will tell you if permission is missing, and each prayer has its own toggle.
- Check you aren't in a Focus or Do Not Disturb mode. If you are, add Establish to that Focus's allowed apps.
- Make sure the ring/silent switch isn't muting alert sounds.
- Open the app once after changing anything — alerts are scheduled while the app runs.
Do alerts work if I don't open the app for a few days?
Yes. Notifications are scheduled ahead of time on the device. Opening the app occasionally keeps the schedule topped up and the widgets fresh.
Widgets & Live Activities
Which widgets are available?
On the Home Screen:
- Countdown — the next prayer and time remaining
- Prayer Time — the current and next prayer with their times
- Day Schedule — the full day, with Hijri and Gregorian dates
- Next Prayer & Affirmation — the next prayer plus today's affirmation
On the Lock Screen:
- A circular and a rectangular countdown
- Inline widgets above the clock: next prayer, Hijri date, or both together
How do I add a widget?
Home Screen: touch and hold an empty area, tap + (or Edit → Add Widget), search for Establish, choose a widget and add it.
Lock Screen: touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customise, select a widget slot, and pick Establish.
My widget shows old times or a dash.
Widgets read the prayer times the app last saved. Open Establish once and the widget will refresh within a moment. If it stays blank, check that a location is set in Settings → Alerts and that Background App Refresh is enabled for Establish in iPhone Settings.
What is the Lock Screen countdown that appears before a prayer?
That's a Live Activity. When your pre-alert fires, a live countdown appears on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, and stays there until the prayer time arrives. Turn it on or off in Settings → Alerts → Pre-Alerts.
Apple Watch
What does the Watch app show?
The countdown to the next prayer, the full day's prayer times, and today's affirmation. There are also complications you can add to a watch face for an at-a-glance next prayer.
The Watch app shows no times.
The Watch receives prayer times from the iPhone. Open Establish on the phone with the Watch nearby, and make sure a location is set. The times sync across shortly afterwards.
Qibla compass
The compass seems inaccurate.
Compasses are sensitive to magnetic interference. Move away from laptops, speakers, magnetic phone mounts and large metal surfaces, then calibrate by moving the phone in a slow figure-of-eight a few times.
Also allow motion and orientation access when prompted — without it the compass can't follow the phone as you turn.
Does the compass need internet?
No. The bearing to Makkah is calculated on the device from your coordinates.
Affirmations
How do I choose which affirmations I see?
Open Settings → More → Affirmation Categories and toggle the themes you want. There are 20 to choose from, including Gratitude, Patience through Resilience, Trust in Divine Timing, Inner Peace, Hope, Humility and Connection with Allah. At least one theme must stay selected.
Where do the affirmations come from?
All 400 are written and curated in-house and ship inside the app. They're never fetched from the internet, so they appear instantly and work offline.
Appearance
Can I switch to a dark theme?
Yes — Settings → More → Display Settings offers Light, Dark, or System, which follows your device.
Can I use a 24-hour clock?
Yes, in the same Display Settings section. The choice applies to the app and the widgets.
Can I change the app icon?
There are fourteen icons in Settings → More → App Icons — lavender, teal, coral, gold, indigo, rose, sky, ocean, navy, cyan, mint, forest, sage and emerald. Tap one and your Home Screen updates.
Location & privacy
Why does Establish want my location?
Prayer times and the Qibla direction both depend on where you are. Your coordinates are used on the device to calculate them and are never uploaded.
Can I use the app without granting location access?
Yes. Search for your city by name in Settings → Alerts and the app uses that city's coordinates. No location permission is requested.
What data does the app send anywhere?
One thing: the text you type into the city search box, sent to the Photon search service so it can return matching cities. Nothing else leaves your device — no analytics, no identifiers, no location. The privacy policy sets it out in full.
How do I delete my data?
Delete the app. Everything Establish stores lives on your device, so removing it removes the lot. There's no server-side copy to request the deletion of.
Troubleshooting
The app is showing the wrong city.
City names come from your device's geocoder and occasionally resolve to a neighbouring district. The prayer times themselves come from your coordinates, so they remain correct. To pin it exactly, search for your city by name in Settings → Alerts.
Alert sounds play at the wrong volume, or not at all.
Notification sound volume follows your device's ringer volume, not media volume. Adjust it with the side buttons while no audio is playing, and check the ring/silent switch. Note that a long adhan may be shortened by the operating system's limit on notification sound length.
Is there an Android version?
It's in development, with the same prayer times, alerts and Home Screen widgets. Email us if you'd like to hear when it's out.
How do I report a bug or suggest a feature?
Email us. For bugs it helps enormously to include your device model, your iOS version, your location or city, and the calculation method you're using — that's usually enough to reproduce the problem immediately.
