Breath-hold and breathwork training for iOS
Getting started
Where do I begin?
Start with Box Breathing or the Foundations program. Foundations is two weeks of 5–10 minute daily sessions with no blackout risk, and it opens and closes with a Max Test so you can see what you gained.
Do not start with an O₂ table. The app will not let you anyway — see below.
The CO₂ Table and O₂ Table are locked
Both tables are generated from your real personal best, so the app needs that number first. Take the Max Breath-Hold Test once — lying down — and both tables unlock, sized to you.
Retest every couple of weeks. Your tables regenerate from the new best.
What do the levels mean?
- Beginner — Box, Rectangle, 4-7-8, Guided Relaxation, Lung & Diaphragm Stretch. Zero blackout risk, do them anywhere.
- Intermediate — CO₂ Table and Apnea Walk. Uncomfortable, not dangerous, when done as instructed.
- Advanced — O₂ Table. Lying down only, maximum one per day, never after a CO₂ table.
- The test — Max Breath-Hold Test. Lying down, ideally with someone nearby.
During a session
The voice or sounds are not playing
- Check the ring/silent switch on the side of your iPhone.
- Open Settings in Respira and confirm Tones and Voice cues are on.
- Turn the volume up while a session is running — iOS sets volume per audio channel.
- Voice cues use the iOS system voice. If you have no English voice installed, add one in iOS Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices.
Can I lock my phone or put it in my pocket mid-session?
Yes. Audio keeps playing when the screen is off, which is how these exercises are meant to be done — eyes closed. While the app is in the foreground the screen is kept awake so it never sleeps mid-hold.
I stopped mid-session by accident
Reopen the app. An interrupted session can be resumed where it left off. If you would rather not, start it again from the beginning — nothing is logged until a session ends.
Can I change the timings?
Yes. Every exercise has editable settings on its detail screen — seconds per side, cycles, hold length, rest, rounds. Your last-used values are remembered per exercise.
Progress and reminders
My streak reset even though I trained
Streaks count calendar days in your device's local time zone. A session logged just after midnight counts for the new day. Training programs work differently and deliberately: they advance by session, not by date, so a missed day never resets a program.
Reminders are not arriving
- iOS Settings → Notifications → Respira → Allow Notifications.
- In Respira's Settings, confirm Daily reminders is on and a time is set.
- Reminders are skipped for a day once you have already trained that day — that is intentional.
- Check that Focus or Sleep mode is not silencing them.
How do I delete my data?
Respira Settings → Danger zone erases history and personal bests. Deleting the app removes everything. Nothing is stored anywhere but your phone — see the privacy policy.
Will my history transfer to a new iPhone?
If you restore the new phone from an encrypted iCloud or Finder backup, yes. There is no account-based sync, because there is no account.
